TODAY IS THE KICK OFF FOR MY “BIG TICKET ITEM” GEOCACHES!  After many months of planning, I have officially hidden a geocache with a huge pay off for the first time find (FTF)!  The FTF will receive a brand new Garmin Dakota 20… it’s better than my current GPS!  I plan on leaving geocaches with big ticket items from time to time.  I hope to be able to do this more regularly as I gain sponsors, so check back often… you never know what you may find!

I spent half the day with KTLA channel 5 news as they covered a story about geocaching and followed some of the local avid geocachers who boast over 3000 geocache finds each.  I was able to take the KTLA camera operator up in a helicopter as we “extreme geocached”, and they followed me as I left my cache.

Here I am climbing into the front seat as we prepare for flight.

My friend and fellow pilot, Esteban Jimenez is spooling up the rotors and getting ready for take off!

After we hid the geocache and landed back at the airport, I did a short interview with reporter Cheryl Getuiza.

I have to say, KTLA has some of the most attractive reporters!  Special thanks to KTLA and Cheryl Getuiza for their interest in our story.

I am super excited to hand over that Garmin Dakota 20 so get out there and find my geocache!  I will feature you in my future episode about geocaching as the big winner.  Can’t wait to meet you…

KTLA Featured Geocache 05

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

N 34° 20.001 W 118° 23.134

TERRAIN: Wide trail. This is a hikers dream! The top of Kagel Mountain.
CACHE DIFFICULTY (1 – 5 being the hardest): Level 4 due to distance of hike.
LOCATION: Sylmar, California 91342

NOTES: THIS IS A BIG TICKET ITEM CACHE!  For the FTF (first time find), there is a brand new Garmin Dakota 20  just waiting for you! This cache is located at the top of Kagel Mountain where you will find plenty of hang gliders.  The road is well maintained, although it is gated so you will have to find a place to park and hike the lengthy trail.  You will find car loads of hang gliders driving this path so watch for vehicles… and snakes.  There will be lots of lizards crossing your path and the view is absolutely amazing.  Enjoy!

ADVISORY: Due to fires and mudslides, the Garmin will NOT actually be in the container.  The FTF will find an official Captain T. Morgan token inside with directions on how to redeem the prize.  I am soooo excited for the FTF!!! :)

HINTS: Once you find the wind sock, you are getting close.

UPDATED: The Garmin Dakota 20 has been claimed!  Congratulations to Bob and Betsy!!!

Another gorgeous day in Los Angeles.  Not too hot and not too windy… a perfect day for hang gliding!  I didn’t actually go hang gliding today, but I am in the que for a tandem flight.  Instead I accompanied my friend, who is a hang gliding instructor, up Kagel Mountain to assist him on a tandem and to scout out the area when it is my turn for a ride.

Hang gliding is something I wanted to do since I was 4 years old.  At the time, I was in love with Superman (Christopher Reeve) and wanted deperately to be able to fly!  My parents would drive me through Simi Valley on the 118 freeway where there use to be a practice area in the hills just west of the Santa Susanna Pass.  I would look up and watch these hang gliders sailing effortlessly through the air, squealing with excitement of what I could only imagine true freedom would feel like.  Of course, my mother would try and discourage me…

Kagel Mountain is north of Sylmar in the San Fernando Valley and has an elevation of  3,547 feet.  Even at that altitude, you can clearly see the landing zone at Sylmar Flight Park below.

This is the vantage point of the runway… literally a runway.

It looks intimidating but I assure you that it doesn’t take much airspeed for you to lift off in a hang glider.  After watching my friends take off, I could hardly contain the excitement I felt at getting a chance to do something I’ve been wanting to do since I was 4 years old… minus the squealing. ;)

On a good day, these gliders can ride thermals, gain amazing altitudes and fly for hours.

Can’t wait for my turn!
